Concurrent Diplomas
Undergraduate students will have access to a range of diplomas which may be completed concurrently with bachelor degrees, to enable them to complete an in-depth sequence of study in disciplines such as mathematics, languages, music and informatics. Where possible, these diplomas are able to be completed within the three years of the degree.
The diploma normally consists of a sequence of first-, second- and third-year subjects in a relevant area of study. For students enrolled in New Generation degrees it is possible to complete some concurrent diplomas by completing only 50 additional points (1 semester full-time) of study.
Diploma in Informatics
The Diploma in Informatics is designed to provide you with a range of data manipulation and presentation techniques that will complement your major studies. As well as developing skills in the information technology and communication fields, you will be encouraged to bring problems and challenges from your main study areas to your Diploma subjects for discussion and resolution.
The Diploma in Informatics is available only to students who are enrolled in the New Generation undergraduate degrees of Arts, Commerce, Environments, Science or Music.
Further details are at: www.informatics.unimelb.edu.au
Note: the University is in the process of obtaining CRICOS accreditation for this course and anticipates enrolling international students into the course from mid-2009 (due to Semester 1 prerequisite subjects). Unless this accreditation is received, the course will not be offered to international students. Please contact International Admissions to check the availability of the course before applying.
Diploma in Languages
The Diploma in Languages is flexibly designed to cater for students without previous training in the language or for those seeking to further develop their existing language skills. To be eligible to apply for the Diploma, you are required to take two first-year language subjects in your first year, appropriate to your study background and language level. Students studying the Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Science or Music degrees will study these subjects through their breadth component. Students studying the Bachelor of Arts will study these language subjects in their core component.
After the successful completion of this first year of language study, you may apply for the Diploma in Languages.
The Diploma in Languages is available in: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish (beginners)
The Diploma in Languages is only available to students who are currently enrolled in the New Generation undergraduate degrees at the University of Melbourne.

Diploma in Mathematical Sciences
The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences enables students to gain a mathematics qualification while completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne. The Diploma is available to students enrolled in any of the New Generation degrees – Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Music or Science. Entry is competitive. To maximise your prospects for entry into the Diploma after completion of the first year of your bachelor degree, you should select two first-year mathematics subjects that follow on from the mathematics you studied in secondary school. You can enter the Diploma with advanced standing based on preparatory subjects studied within the first two years of your course, either within core subjects or in your breadth component, depending on your degree. In most cases this means that you only study one semester extra in addition to your three-year degree.
The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences is available to students who are currently enrolled in the New Generation undergraduate degrees of Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Science or Music.

Diploma in Music (Practical)
The Diploma in Music (Practical) comprises a three-year sequence of practical, ensemble and elective subjects, studied alongside Bachelor of Music students, giving you the opportunity to build valuable friendships and networks in a challenging musical environment. Study areas cover music performance and ensemble studies and, via elective subjects, you should also have a basic understanding of the historical and theoretical knowledge that forms part of advanced musical training.
The new generation Diploma in Music (Practical) is studied concurrently with a New Generation undergraduate degree – Arts, Science, Commerce, Biomedicine or Environments and has been specially structured over a three-year time frame to allow for concurrent completion of both Bachelor and Diploma.
Applications for entry into the Diploma should be made directly to the Faculty of Music once you have been accepted into your main degree course. Admission is by audition. Auditions are usually held in early February each year.

Completing Two Degrees Sequentially
Students, who complete one New Generation degree, may apply to undertake a second or sequential New Generation undergraduate degree. Applicants who meet the entry requirements for the second degree (including prerequisites) will be granted 100 points of credit. Most sequential (or second) degrees will be able to be completed in two full-time years of study, but sequencing of subjects may necessitate three years in some degrees.
